Vinegar is mostly used in the kitchen to spice up dishes or making salads or make feta. Not many people know there are more uses to vinegar than just in the kitchen.
Vinegar has been used since ancient times as a disinfectant to heal wounds; the Chinese used it as antibacterial to clean hands; the early Americans used vinegar to treat fever.
Here are some health uses of vinegar:
- Antimicrobial – studies have shown that a proper combination of lemon juice and vinegar is powerful enough to kill salmonella. It acts as a cleaning agent and kills bacteria.
- Antioxidant – Antioxidants are known for their anti-aging properties and vinegar has properties that prevent oxidation of other cell membranes in our body. A type of stress called oxidative stress can be prevented by adding vinegar to our diet.
- Anti-diabetic – Vinegar can lower sugar levels in our blood system as well. It lowers blood pressure, thereby preventing complex carbohydrates being completely broken down – which essentially mean less sugar in our blood stream and more going leaving your body!
- Anticancer – The antioxidant properties of vinegar actually help reduce the risk of many types of cancer. The Japanese vinegars, such as Kurosu and Kibizu are especially known to inhibit cancer cell growth.
- Anti-obesity – A research on this aspect has shown people who consumed vinegar in a condiment with breakfast tend to eat less during the day Doing this can mean losing at least 1.5 pounds a month.
- Heartburn – Heartburn is caused by having too little acid in the stomach. You can balance that by consuming a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar mixed in a big glass of water daily.
- Getting the Most from Vegetables – The vinegar in salad dressing or adding vinegar to a salad increases the absorption of nutrients from salads and, in fact, the rest of your meal!
